Under His Wing

My daddy did a lot of work

& a lot of praying,

That’s some of what really

sticks in my memory

He Loves God & his family

it made a permanent impression on me

Daddy did his best to lead

I’m forever thankful

for growing up

Under his wing

Helping My Old Man

I remember as a young kid painting houses some days

& sanding down wood while the hot sun would blaze

I even remember laying tile, got the glue on my hands

I was just thrilled to be helping out my old man

Inspired by memories of doing light assistant work on my father’s rental properties as a kid.

It proved to me that even w/my physical ailment, I could still be productive, which I think was the point, but more than that I liked just the time w/him.

Father/Son Fun

My six year old son & I are playing around with rhymes

the ones we’re putting together are so simple sometimes

Mouse, house, cat, hat, stuff like that,

nothing fancy, but that’s alright,

I just love having fun together while I write

I know that his childhood will go by fast

In the blink of an eye, a flash,

but in the here & now, we’re having a blast

The Subaru

I remember daddy having an old black Subaru

That thing was a rust bucket, I’m telling you

we called it the tin can, but at least it ran

It wasn’t til years later, I began to understand

the sacrifice…

He drove it even though it was a heap,

not because he was “being cheap”

but because his money went

to doing things

like providing our food

& a warm bed to sleep in…

I’ve got appreciation & respect

for that old car, in retrospect
