It bothers me immensely when I see
those who are struggling, genuinely,
getting kicked around
when they’re already down
Don’t kick the downtrodden,
show a little compassion
is it too much to ask now?

Tony’s sitting at the laundromat alone,
waiting on his last load of clothes
When another man comes in out of the rain
w/just what’s on his back
shaking off the wet & cold
Tony looks at him, smiles & says:
“Man, how about I help you right now? I’ve got some dry jeans and t-shirts here,
feel free to check them out, take whatever you need, brother
…I’ve got plenty anyhow”
The other man looks at Tony w/thanks, and says:
“you give me hope I’ve got to say,
I thought compassionate people like you
were on the fade these days”

Passersby hear footsteps falling
on wet streets soaked by rain
A weeping broken old man is calling
Hoping his calls are not in vain
All his lost aimless wandering
Has nearly driven him insane
but someone reaches out
with compassionate hands
To help him home again

This is the story of a man,
whose body has betrayed him
He’s been living on a welfare check
& there’s people who shame him
but they don’t really understand
never walked a mile in his shoes
If they had even for a moment,
If they had a clue what he goes through
Just to be able to do
the most basic things
They’d have a little empathy,
they would be
singing a different tune

If you were worn & weary
I would gladly lift you up
If you hungered, or you thirst,
I’d gladly fill your plate & cup
Anything you needed
I would not turn you away
Godly Love is the cure
for what ails the world today

There are some things you may not see
Until they touch you directly
and change your understanding
Walking in someone else’s shoes
Can teach you to be a more compassionate being

A poem that just came rushing to mind earlier
Be somebody’s angel, show a little grace
Do anything you can to make this world a better place
We have opportunities, each & every day
to make lives change, in positive ways
wipe tears away
and put a smile on somebody’s face

Take the time to show Love to someone today
You can show it in simple ways,
like buying them lunch, sitting w/them to pray,
stopping in just to say
“You matter to me, I hope you’re doing okay”

It can be so easy, focusing only on the tragedies
but let’s not forget the beautiful blessings
Everyone could use reminders now & then
A kind smile from a stranger, a loving hug from a friend

Huddled around a trash can fire fighting to keep warm
with growling empty bellies, clothes tattered, torn
Many people pass them by & look at them with scorn
but they are someone’s sons & daughters
Their lives matter too, so help them out
& think about that they could be me or you
