It’s a keepsake from old man Jack
a flannel shirt, blue & black
button down w/small pearl snaps
great for any occasion, that’s a fact
designed for any weather, good or bad,
It fits well, it’s not too snug
When I wear it, it’s like
a comfortable hug

My buddy Steve, he’s got some scars
Well hidden, but still they are
there
It really breaks my heart,
some of the things he’s shared w/me
He didn’t grow up in the most affectionate family
but thankfully, he learned from that
What not to be, and he’s always
been great to me
it’s a wonder he made it
through his youth with his sanity

They’ve got steady hearts beating,
but still trembling hands
Wondering if their Love will make it,
If they have what it demands
They’ve seen things that looked so sturdy
Go down in flames,
so if they have their doubts,
that’s what’s to blame

If people spent more time
sharing Love than throwing shade
Society as a whole would be
so much better that way

As long as I’m living, so long as I’m here
I’ll comfort you, share your joys
and soothe your fears
Kiss away any tears, you can count on me
No matter what comes, I’ll Love you fiercely

To my wife for her upcoming birthday in November
I remember daddy having an old black Subaru
That thing was a rust bucket, I’m telling you
we called it the tin can, but at least it ran
It wasn’t til years later, I began to understand
the sacrifice…
He drove it even though it was a heap,
not because he was “being cheap”
but because his money went
to doing things
like providing our food
& a warm bed to sleep in…
I’ve got appreciation & respect
for that old car, in retrospect
