Unlikely Patient

A Dr. had a certain patient on his ward that was new, they’d never met before

as he got to know him more, the patient really struck a chord,

The Doc was struck first by the fact

that the kid was in a mental institution at only age eight

The Doc thought no kid should have so much on his emotional plate

that they end up that way

He knew it’s hard enough for an adult,

but a kid has got to be feeling crushed by so much weight

He knew parents should be there for kids, to carry them through,

that no child should feel like they’ve got no one to turn to

Enough

Anyone could end up in the break down lane

Feeling stressed & strained like they’re going insane

Thinking their efforts are as futile

As launching a paper plane in a hurricane

but you know what? Despite life’s pain

It’s not empty, not futile, not in vain

Every morning when we rise again

There is mercy, there is hope, there is Love

and that is enough

Sweet Ruby

They laid his sweet Ruby under a live oak,

buried in her favorite red dress & cloak

The day they laid her down to rest, He did his best,

to hold on to the last words that she spoke,

She’d said to him as she’d given him one last kiss:

“I love you now & I always will, I know this loss is a bitter pill,

but rest assured I’ll see you again, & always remember this,

that for forty three years, through ice & fire & raging winds,

you were the man I love & my best friend”

“I’d Do It All Over Again”

A kid packed his bags heavy,

threw them in his Chevy truck

Headed down to Texas,

where people had said he should try his luck

He spent his first months in Fort Worth,

staying w/a good friend of his,

Working days as a dishwasher

& spending his nights

playing gigs,

Being a musician it was a tough row to hoe

but even so, he was glad he made a go of it,

Years later when he’d succeeded,

He said “I’ve got to admit,

If I had to go back, I’d do it all over again”
